Nanga Baptist is located in the Dunga area of the Nyalenda slum. The sanctuary is a concrete, tin- roofed structure that seats about 150 people, located within a relatively large compound. Irene and Erick were hired early in September 2010 and trained with the other Kisumu centers before the Nanga launching. When chosing the first group of clients, Irene and Erick had to choose the neediest and most recently-tested individuals to work with in the first phase of the center. Normal center operations began November 2010.
The term “Dunga” refers to the westernmost section of the Nyalenda slum, which stretches along the Southern border of Kisumu. The Dunga section is closest to Lake Victoria, and has a similar composition to the areas served by the Central and Nyalenda centers. Because there is little education and healthcare for people living with HIV/AIDS, many men especially have died and left single mothers in charge of several children.
Irene and her husband Elphus are have one child.
Erick and his wife Iscar have two children, one boy and one girl.
